On May 27th 2010 was presented at the University Paul Cezanne, Scientific Centre of St Jerôme a PhD dealing with:

Bibliographic study and use of the methods and tools of Competitive Intelligence for the study of the biodiesel production in Indonesia. Energy Development Strategies in North Sulawesi (Étude bibliographique et utilisation des méthodes et outils de l‘Intelligence Économique pour l‘étude de la production de biodiesel en Indonésie. Stratégie du développement énergétique du Nord Sulawesi (Indonesie)) (summary in French and English available)

The work of Mr Herdy Liow being directed jointly by Dr Jacky Kister (Director CNRS) and Professor Henri Dou. Among the person invited, Mr Philippe Clerc represented the ACFCI (Assemblée Françaises des Chambres de Commerce et d’Industrie, as well as the Association Internationale Francophone d’Intelligence Economique (AIFIE)). This thesis was confidential the subject being sensible as well on political and industrial sides. The candidate, Mr Herdy Liow after a global presentation of the energy situation? in Indonesia focused his study on the biodiesel proudction via the palm oil as starting material  (the candidate during his PhD research made a probational period in LEMIGAS, Jakarta, Indonesia).

The first part of the Thesis being a global bibliographic study to determine the impact of various energy solution on the Sulawesi development through the cycle of Competitive intelligence and the WSOT analysis. In this study a large place was given to the patent analysis (APA, Automatic Patent Analysis via the Matheo-Patent system).

The second part concerned a careful analysis of all the various steps of the palmoil process and particularly the batch process, the candidate developed what could be for the North Sulawesi the adaptation of the batch process system of the palm oil process. The solution developed by the candidate was to remain as possible closer of a sustainable development, avoiding among other things weather impact and deforestation. The solution is to develop small units of biodiesel based on a mixture of coconut oil and Jatropha Curcas oil. (there are experimental plantations of Jatropha in the North Sulawesi as well as a large production of coconut oil). The Jatropha because of the size of the Jatropha shrub is compatible with a join development in coconut plantations. The presentation of the Thesis was of a high quality, the candidate being perfectly accurate with his subject. The Jury during the discussion underlines the autonomy of the candidate and his strategic choice which fit well with the need of the North Sulawesi Province (SULUT). The Jury was also praised by the presentation for all the various energy solutions of the North Sulawesi of a financial balance of the processes.

The candidate obtained the grade of “Docteur en Science de l’Information et de la Communication de l’Université Paul Cezanne” with the mention “très honorable” with the personnal congratulation of all the jury and invited members (the Universty did not give any more formal “felicitations”).

After the presentation of the PhD a light meal was served with various Indonesian dishes thank to the amability of the Indonesian Consulate in Marseille (see the pictures).
