Worshop on patent and innovation - OUM Open University of Malaysia - July 2009

 During the course of the Master done in collaboration with the OUM and IMPGT (University Paul Cezanne in Aix-Marseille - France), a workshop dealing with Intellectual Property and Innovation has been presented. The attendance, (partial view) mostly people already working in Industry has particularly appreciated that part of the presentations emphasized the key role of patents for SMEs.  Patents can be used in two ways: one for the protection of the Intellectual Knowledge of companies nd the other as a source of free information to innovate.

During the presentation a large place has been done to Matheo-Patent which faciliate the knowledge recovery from patents through various bibliometrics treatments (charts, matrix, networks, significant words extraction, etc.). The Professor Henri Dou presented some of his views upon the use of patent as a source of innovation specially for SMEs and shared some experiences from various countries (Indonesia, Brasil, Cameroon, France). The example develop by Toryod in Thaïland to use Matheo Patent to map the patents of various areas was underlined.

During the meeting, the role of the experts in the analysis of the information as well as for the choice and discussions of strategic oprientations for enterprises or regions was discussed within the light of the experience of South Korea (Han projetc to determine the strategic technologies) and France (determination of the strategic technologies). The link between patent analysis and strategic information for clusters or for the  poles of competitiveness was also discussed in detail.

During the course, various information ressources: articles, books, case studies, dealing with patents and SME were presented. They for most of them are developed and presented by the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) which makes a remarkable effort towards the development of the patent field for SMEs.
